Children & Family Resource Center Awarded $150,000 Annually to Strengthen Families and Prevent Child Abuse in North Carolina

HENDERSONVILLE, NC — Children & Family Resource Center (CFRC) has been awarded $150,000 in annual funding for State Fiscal Years 2027–2030 from the North Carolina Division of Social Services (NCDSS) to expand and strengthen family support services that help prevent child abuse and neglect.

This funding, awarded through the NCDSS Family Support Program Services initiative, supports community-based programs designed to build protective factors in families—ensuring children grow up in safe, stable, and nurturing environments.

“We are extremely grateful for the continued support of the NC DSS Family Support Program Services Initiative,” said Emily Balcken, Executive Director of CFRC. “This funding will allow us to continue our Circle of Parents support groups and expand our Parents as Teachers home-visiting program to reach more families. Both programs help build Protective Factors that support family resilience, strengthen parent-child relationships, and reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect, ultimately contributing to healthier, more stable outcomes for children and caregivers in our community.”

For nearly three decades, CFRC has served Henderson County and surrounding communities by working alongside families to prevent child abuse and neglect before it occurs. Through evidence-based programs such as Parents as Teachers (PAT), Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), maternal health initiatives, and hands-on family support services like the Full Tum, Dry Bum formula and diaper assistance program, CFRC helps parents build confidence, connection, and stability.

“Every family deserves support, not just in moments of crisis, but in everyday parenting,” Balcken added. “This funding helps us meet families where they are and walk alongside them with compassion and practical support.”

Each year, CFRC serves hundreds of children and families across the region, offering education, resources, and personalized support that reduce stress, strengthen parent-child relationships, and create safer home environments.
